This Mission is Possible

Dear Friend,
We need your help. As you may have viewed on Fox 5 News or read in The Voice of The Hill, our beloved Mission Possible after-school program at Potomac Gardens was recently burglarized. Actually, three break-ins occurred in the same week! Practically everything of substantive and nostalgic value was taken.
Ice Cream SocialThis story, however, is not one of despair – but of hope. We have hope that the children will see us as an inspiration and leader in our community. We hope to provide ongoing care and a nurturing environment to a population underserved. And, we hope that you will help us in this effort.

Mission Possible remains closed. The unit is not secure and the windows in our unit are shattered or busted out completely. We are in talks with DC Housing Authority to see that progress is made for our Potomac Gardens site. We can only reopen our facility with your help.

Here’s what we need:

  • Items for our “Fun Zone” (toys, games, puzzles, bean bag chairs, TV)
  • Arts & Crafts items
  • Non-perishable food for the pantryJump rope games
  • Food gift cards for the purchase of dairy products, meats, and drinks
  • Window air conditioning units
  • Alarm unit
  • School supplies (paper, pens, erasers, calculators, notebooks, pencils)
  • Sports items (basketballs, footballs, kickballs, hoola-hoops, jump ropes)
  • Financial Donation

6th Annual Golf Tournament Gearing Up!
Save the Date - September 8, 2008

Our 5th annual golf tournament was an unprecedented success! We raised over $25,000 that went directly to help shelter homeless families and provide emergency assistance to those living on the margins of our community. We have already started planning for 2008 and we hope you will join us!

CHGM will tee off this year's tournament with registration starting at 11:00 a.m., then all of our golfers are invited to enjoy lunch before our shot gun start.  The tournament is played in a scramble format, so plan on a wonderful day of golf.

Here are some of the reasons you will want to be part of this great event:

  • To ensure that we have plenty of time on the course to play at our own pace, the tournament is limited to 100 golfers

  • We are returning to our 2007 golf course - Glenn Dale Golf Club. We are planning for a great day of golf and fun!

  • Contest, prizes for golfers and teams

  • Outstanding raffle of door prizes and gift bags

  • The opportunity to give to those most in need in the Capitol Hill community

Reserve your space early, so you don’t miss this exciting event! For Golfer info, click here. For sponsorship infor, click here

Celebrating community service since 1967, Capitol Hill Group Ministry (CHGM) is an interfaith, interracial coalition of congregations and concerned individuals united to serve the spiritual and social needs of the Capitol Hill Community, Ward 6 and beyond.

In 2007...we served over 3400 homeless and at-risk families and individuals found emergency assistance in a crisis or longer-term support to move out of the cycle of despair and crisis. We serve both low-income households – individuals, seniors, and families –in Ward 6 and homeless families from across the District of Columbia.

  • Congregation Based Shelter Program. Families not only received overnight shelter but also intensive case management to empower and assist them to take the essential first steps toward greater independence: day care, employment and/or job training, addressing mental and medical health issues, learning needed life skills, and identifying next stage appropriate housing.
  • Shirley’s Place, our Day Hospitality Center. Shirley’s Place is open 7 days a week for aftercare, case management, and drop in services allows families with children (primarily from Ward 6, but 18 of whom were homeless or in transitional housing programs) to stay together, meet their children’s basic needs, and live healthier lives through our family strengthening services at our Family Resource Center. This involves intensive case management, home visits, resource and referral and in 14 cases identifying and arranging for affordable housing.
  • Our Social Service Office assisted 1,170 households in Ward 6: prevented 63 evictions, restored utilities to another 59 households; helped over 440 people with essential transportation to jobs, medical appointments and interviews; addressed more than 510 households’ emergency food needs; and another 101 with IDs, prescriptions and other essential items. Our street outreach team connected with 110 neighbors on the street, helping 7 move into transitional or permanent housing. In addition, more than 1900 individuals and families got accurate information and appropriate referrals through our Social Service and Admin offices telephone and walk in referral services.
  • 22 children improved their basic academic skills, expanded their cultural horizons, and learned essential life skills at Mission Possible our out of school program that serves the Potomac Gardens public housing community located at 13th and Pennsylvania Ave, SE. Mission Possible is designed and coordinated by adult residents of the community it serves.
  • 75 persons with incomes below $45,000 filed their state and Federal tax returns through our all-volunteer run Low-Income Tax Clinic organized in partnership with the Capitol Hill Computer Corner.
  •  Organized volunteer drives resulting in school supplies for 50 families; thanksgiving meals for 180 families in Ward 6; holiday joy for 93 families with 259 children.
